Where Can I Sign up for a DOT SAP Program?

If you are a safety-sensitive employee who has tested positive on a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and/or alcohol test, you will need to enroll in a DOT SAP program. You can return to your safety-sensitive duties only after you adhere to your SAP’s recommendations and follow the DOT’s procedures. SAP Referral Services understands that finding a SAP in your geographic area can be difficult. Getting back to work is made easy by enrolling in our FastTrack Enrollment Program.

What Is a DOT SAP Program?

Once a DOT mandated, safety-sensitive employee tests positive on a drug and/or alcohol test they are removed immediately from their safety-sensitive position. In order to go back to work in a safety-sensitive capacity the employee must successfully complete the DOT SAP program. The SAP, or Substance Abuse Professional, determines if an employee has complied with the DOT’s rules and SAP’s recommendations of treatment and/or education.

Return to Duty with a DOT SAP Program

There are many steps to take in order to return to duty if you are a DOT mandated, safety-sensitive employee. The DOT SAP program starts with an initial face-to-face evaluation with a DOT qualified SAP that has met DOT requirements. The SAP will make recommendations for the employee to undergo treatment or education. The employee is to be responsible and remain in compliance with their SAP’s recommendation(s). Once an employee has complied with their treatment, their SAP will conduct a follow-up evaluation and submit an assessment of the employee’s eligibility to submit to a return-to-duty test in order to be considered for reinstatement to their safety-sensitive job. Upon results of a negative test, they will be allowed to go back to work. Their SAP may also refer to an aftercare treatment program. An employee will also have to complete follow-up alcohol and/or drug testing after return to safety-sensitive work.
