Failed Drug Test? Start Your SAP Program NOW

Do you work in a safety-sensitive position within one of the Department of Transportation modes such as USCG, FAA, FMCSA, PHMSA, or FRA? If so you, you are familiar with the drug and alcohol testing that is required to perform safety-sensitive duties. If you fail a drug and/or alcohol test you will be removed from your safety-sensitive work and must complete the return to duty process so you can get back to work.

Find a DOT-Qualified SAP and SAP Program

There are several ways to find a SAP, or substance abuse professional. Your employer is required to either give you a SAP list or a referral to a service agent. If you use a SAP list, ensure that your SAP is DOT qualified. If you work from a list, you will also have to call multiple SAPs, wait for returned calls, and hope that they have an available appointment. Working with a service agent, SAP Referral Services, will give you peace of mind. Their SAPs are fully qualified, and you can typically be connected with a SAP in your area within 72 business hours.

What the Return to Duty Process Is Like

The SAP will perform an initial evaluation to determine the extent of your drug and/or alcohol misuse. After the initial evaluation they will recommend an appropriate treatment and/or education program for you to complete. This may include:

  • Outpatient treatment
  • Inpatient treatment programs or addiction rehabilitation programs
  • Individual therapy programs like cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy
  • Group therapy programs
  • Other education programs relating to drug or alcohol abuse

After your follow-up evaluation, the SAP will determine if you complied with the outlined program. If you did, then you will be eligible to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. If you return a negative result you can then resume safety-sensitive work.

It can be tough to find a reliable SAP quickly, especially if you don’t have the time or energy to search through a SAP list. Partner with SAP Referral Services (SRS) to find a DOT qualified SAP NOW. Get in touch with SRS today.
