Learn More About Starting a SAP Program
DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees must comply with a SAP program after defying drug and/or alcohol rules. The program is required before they may return to their safety-sensitive tasks. A SAP program consists of an evaluation by a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), successful completion of education programs and/or treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
First, comes the evaluation. During this face-to-face clinical meeting, the SAP determines the extent of the employee’s substance abuse. Next, they decide what type of education and/or treatment the employee must undergo to address their issues. To successfully complete the program, employees must comply with the recommendations set by the SAP and fully finish the treatment and/or education.
Additionally, the employee must undergo a follow-up evaluation. The SAP determines if the program was followed as proposed and if the employee is ready to resume their safety-sensitive functions. The SAP writes a report to the employer stating the employee’s eligibility (or ineligibility) to return to work. If the SAP reports that the employee was successful, the employee is approved to take a return-to-duty test. Once the employee achieves a negative test result, they may resume his/her safety-sensitive functions.
