DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees should expect testing throughout their employment. Tests are administered pre-employment, randomly, after serious accidents, for return-to-duty and for the purpose of follow-up testing. Since tests are given at random, some employees may be selected for testing several times in a single year. On the other hand, others may not be selected at all. Employers also have the right to require testing for an employee if they have shown signs of impairment at work. Please note: refusing to take part in a drug and/or alcohol test is considered equal to a failed DOT drug test.
