Accessing Your FMCSA Clearinghouse Record

The new Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse went into effect in January of this year. This secure online database aims to improve safety by tracking driver drug and/or alcohol violations. As a CDL driver you may wonder how you can review your own FMCSA Clearinghouse record. Read on for more information.

How to View Your FMCSA Clearinghouse Record

A driver can gain access to their own record only after they have registered for the Clearinghouse. To do so, create an account on the Clearinghouse website and enter your CDL information. You must also add your email address and confirm it. Next, set up a password, a security code, and enter your contact information. Once your account is verified, your registration is complete.

It is important to know that it is free of charge for drivers to access and review their records. The Clearinghouse will notify drivers by mail or electronically if additional information is added, revised, or removed. The driver’s information will be stored by date of birth and CDL number.

Objective of the FMCSA Clearinghouse

The FMCSA Clearinghouse gives employers, FMCSA, SDLAs (State Driver Licensing Agencies), and State law enforcement real-time information about commercial driver’s license holders’ alcohol and drug program violations. Positive alcohol and drug results, as well as test refusals, are recorded here. Additionally, when a driver completes the return-to-duty process, it will also be recorded in the Clearinghouse. Finally, in the event of a violation, employers are required to submit the date of the violation as well as a detailed description of the event and provide witnesses.

With the arrival of the FMCSA Clearinghouse, there is now an additional step before employers can hire drivers. First, they must register with the Clearinghouse. Next, employers need to search the database for violations that will prohibit a potential new driver from performing safety-sensitive functions. The prospective employee will have to authorize the release of their FMCSA Clearinghouse record to their employer as well.
