Why Do I Need a Substance Abuse Professional?
If you have recently failed a mandatory Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and/or alcohol screening, you are probably wondering, “what happens next?” The DOT takes safety seriously, but also values the health and wellness of mandated employees. During the time that you are removed from duty, you will have to make an appointment with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). It is upon your visit with your SAP that you will be evaluated, be recommended to undergo education and/or treatment for your alcohol/drug misuse and be given clearance to take another drug and/or alcohol test.
Follow Your Substance Abuse Professional’s Steps
Step one of the SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) program is an initial evaluation. Based on the initial evaluation, your SAP counselor will make recommendations for treatment and/or education. For example treatment might include counseling sessions about responsible alcohol consumption, Intensive Outpatient Treatment or Inpatient Rehabilitation depending on their evaluation during your initial visit. During your treatment process, you will check back in with your SAP counselor.
Once you have completed the recommended education and/or treatment, you will have a final face-to-face evaluation. Based on the results of the final evaluation, you may then be cleared to drug/alcohol screening for consideration for return to duty. Please note that the SAP is the only person who can recommend a return to duty test.
