When Do You Need a DOT SAP Evaluation?

DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees must take drug and alcohol tests throughout their careers. The regulations are enforced by the Federal Department of Transportation and ensure that the transportation industry is as safe as possible. However, sometimes employees fail or refuse to take these tests (which counts as an automatic failure). When this situation arises, employees are immediately removed from their duties. They may not return until they undergo a DOT SAP evaluation and successfully comply with the return-to-duty process.

What Happens During a DOT SAP Evaluation?

A DOT SAP evaluation is meant to determine if you are struggling with addiction. First, the SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) assesses whether or not substance abuse plays a substantial role in your life. This happens during the first half of the evaluation, referred to as the screening process. Next, the SAP provider uses information that they gathered and develops a tailored treatment plan. The plan may consist of treatment, education, and/or counseling. The hope being that these steps will help you overcome any identified issues and get safely back to work.
