What Should I Expect from My Substance Abuse Professional Evaluation
Employees and applicants must submit to drug and/or alcohol tests for reasons such as pre-employment testing, post-workplace accident testing, reasonable suspicion, random drug testing, return to duty, and follow-up testing. This type of testing is mandatory for Department of Transportation-mandated safety-sensitive roles. Safety-sensitive DOT employees must remain drug and/or alcohol free while on duty to protect the safety of themselves, their colleagues, and the general public. If the employee fails, they will immediately be removed from their safety-sensitive duties and need to schedule an appointment with a Substance Abuse Professional for an evaluation to begin the return to duty process.
Finding Substance Abuse Professionals
Substance Abuse Professionals specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse issues, DOT testing processes, and return-to-duty procedures. You can find these professionals through lists online, or referral agents.
The referral agent route is most effective. It’s easier, quicker, and more reliable. If you turn to the experts, such as SAP Referral Services, you will find a qualified SAP quickly so that you can start the return to duty process sooner than later.
The SAPs in our network meet mandated qualifications so you can complete the return to duty process with confidence. If you were to complete the process with a SAP who isn’t DOT-qualified you may have to repeat the entire process.
Preparing for Your Evaluation
Your substance abuse evaluation helps the SAP understand the extent of your specific alcohol and/or drug misuse. The SAP assesses the severity of substance misuse and gathers information to make recommendations relating to employee education and/or treatment. Once they have determined your compliance with their outlined protocol during a follow-up evaluation, the SAP can refer you to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. If you pass the test then you are legally allowed to resume safety-sensitive duties.
