What Should I Expect from a DOT SAP Evaluation?
If you are a safety-sensitive DOT-mandated employee with a recently failed drug and/or alcohol test you will need to receive a DOT SAP evaluation, and complete the return-to-duty process before you are eligible to resume your safety-sensitive duties.
DOT-mandated employees can pose safety risks to themselves and the public by operating commercial or revenue vehicles under the influence of prohibited drugs or alcohol. Therefore, all safety-sensitive employees will be required to submit to drug and alcohol testing.
Safety-sensitive employees will face immediate suspension from safety-sensitive duties if the BAC reading is higher than 0.04%, or if they have a positive drug test. If this is the case they will have to find a SAP in their area and proceed with the first step of the return-to-duty process by receiving a DOT SAP evaluation.
Who is a SAP?
A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is usually a licensed doctor, psychologist, social worker, employee assistance professional, alcohol counselor certified by NAADAC, ICRC, or NBCC, or other professionals who have the necessary training and qualifications to act as DOT Substance Abuse Professionals.
The primary responsibility of a SAP is to ensure that individuals who failed DOT drug or alcohol tests are fit to return to work.
Steps in a DOT SAP Evaluation
A qualified SAP can ensure employees’ complete return-to-duty. A SAP ensures that the public’s safety is first and foremost and that is taken into consideration when they evaluate a DOT-mandated, safety-sensitive employee. Once an employee schedules an appointment with a SAP in their area they will be seen for an initial evaluation. The SAP will then recommend a treatment and/or education program based on their evaluation of the employee. Once the employee has successfully complied with the protocol outlined by their SAP, they will be seen for a follow-up evaluation and likely will be referred to submit to a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. If they receive a negative result they are then eligible to be considered to resume safety-sensitive duties.
