What is the DOT Post-Accident Drug Testing Procedure?

When accidents happen at the workplace, DOT-mandated employees have to undergo post- accident testing for drugs and/or alcohol. If the results come back positive, then they will be unable to work and have to complete a mandatory SAP Program with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) in order to return to work. If you or your employee had an accident at work, then you, or they, need to undergo DOT post-accident drug testing and if there is a positive result you or they must see a SAP in order to be cleared for return to duty.

What Is the DOT Post-Accident Drug Testing Procedure?

Employees are required to seek the assistance of a SAP after receiving positive results from DOT Post-Accident drug testing in order to return to their positions. DOT post-accident drug testing is just one part of the DOT’s process to help keep the public and its employees safe.

Finding a qualified SAP is the first step. The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) will meet with you during an initial interview and consider all guidelines of the DOT in making a treatment recommendation. During this time, they will evaluate the employee and make recommendations for education, rehabilitation, and/or treatment to help resolve any issues and to get them qualified to return to safety sensitive work.

The SAP will monitor the employee’s progress as they go through their treatment process. When an employee has complied with all education or treatment, they will be required to complete return-to-duty testing, which is a part of the DOT drug testing procedure. If your SAP sees your progress and that you demonstrated compliance, then they can submit a report allowing your employer to perform a return-to-duty test and upon a negative result return you to safety sensitive duties.
