What Is a SAP Program?

Employees mandated by the Department of Transportation are held to high safety standards, which include periodic drug or alcohol screenings. If a DOT mandated employee fails a drug or alcohol test, they will be removed from duty and be mandated to enroll in a SAP Program. The SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) Program will work with the employee to get them to return to duty status. A SAP program includes one-on-one interviews, treatment, education, and return-to-duty reporting.

Did You Test Positive During a DOT Mandated Screening, Look for a SAP Program near You

The DOT SAP cares about the safety of the employees, as well as the duty to protect the public. Their commitment to safety requires employees be able to safely perform safety-sensitive jobs.

If you have tested positive during a DOT mandated drug or alcohol test, you can look for a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional near you. He or she will meet with you face to face and evaluate what level of treatment and/or education program you need to attend.

What Does a SAP Program Entail?

The SAP process requires a face-to-face substance abuse evaluation, and recommendations for treatment and/or education programs. You will meet with your assigned SAP after complying with treatment or education for a follow-up face to face evaluation. If you have complied with your recommendations and appear to be ready to go back to work, the SAP may recommend a return to duty test. Please note that your SAP counselor is the only person who can recommend your return to work. During this program, the SAP will compile compliance reports and following the follow-up evaluation make their decision whether the employee is eligible to return to duty – this includes a recommendation for a drug and/or alcohol screening. Your job will be contingent on your employer allowing you to return to your safety-sensitive tasks.
