What Do I Need to Know About DOT Substance Abuse Professional Training?

Substance abuse is a very serious problem and has become an epidemic in parts of the country. There are many people that work in safety-sensitive jobs where substance use is not permitted. Most of these safety-sensitive employees will undergo random drug and/or alcohol testing. If an employee tests positive for substance use the DOT requires that they undergo evaluations with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) in order to return to duty. What are the Steps in Substance Abuse Professional Training?

The first thing to ask if you want to be a SAP is “What does a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) do?” A SAP is a clinician that evaluates employees that have violated DOT regulations by testing positive for drugs/alcohol and makes recommendations for treatment or education. A Substance Abuse Professional is an advocate for public safety and is qualified only after following the requirements published by the DOT.

In order to qualify for Substance Abuse Professional training, you must maintain a State license as a MD or DO, Psychologist, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Employee Assistance Professional or Drug and Alcohol Counselor. If you are a Drug and Alcohol Counselor you also must maintain an International Certification through IC&RC, NAADAC or NBCC.
