USCG Employees, Did You Fail Post-Accident Drug Testing?

The United States Coast Guard, or USCG, requires their safety-sensitive employees to undergo drug and/or alcohol testings. These drug and/or alcohol tests are required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The mandated drug and alcohol tests help employers ensure that their employees and themselves are compliant with the DOT’s testing rules and regulations. If a USCG employee were to fail post-accident drug testing, they are required to leave their safety-sensitive position and undergo treatment with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

Why Do USCG Employees Who Fail Post-Accident Drug Testing Need a SAP?

When a DOT mandated employee’s drug and/or alcohol results are positive, they failed a DOT mandated test. A failed test means that the DOT mandated employee had a prohibited amount of drug or alcohol in their system, failed to show up for the test, or left the premises before completing the test. To return to safety-sensitive duties, a USCG employee needs to be evaluated by a qualified SAP. The SAP is required by law to evaluate the individual who has failed the DOT mandated test according to specific rules and regulations. A DOT mandated employee who has failed a DOT drug test must undergo the following in order to return to safety-sensitive work:

  • Removal from safety-sensitive position
  • Evaluation by a qualified SAP, where they will suggest a suitable program for treatment and/or education
  • Successful compliance of suggested treatment and/or education
  • Follow-up evaluation by your SAP to determine if you can be submitted to a return to duty test
  • Complete additional drug or alcohol testing or additional treatment, as advised by the SAP
