Substance abuse professionals, or SAPs, are the professionals who evaluate employees who have been in violation of DOT drug and alcohol regulations. They also make recommendations about follow-up testing, treatment, education, aftercare, and recommendations for a return to duty test.

Substance Abuse Professionals play a major role in deciding whether or not an employee is fit to operate perform safety-sensitive functions of their DOT-mandated job such as operate planes, trains, buses, trucks, and public transportation. This means that Substance Abuse Professionals have a tremendous amount of responsibility in protecting the public by accurately evaluating employees and making the best recommendations in each unique situation.

How Does Someone Qualify as a SAP?

In order to qualify as a SAP, you’ll need to have one of the following pre-requisite credentials. All Substance Abuse Professionals are required to be licensed or certified as a:

  • Physician (Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy)
  • Social Worker
  • Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Psychologist
  • Employee Assistance Professional
  • IC&RC, NADAAC or NBCC Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor

In order to obtain SAP qualification, you’ll need to take part in a DOT qualified training program. After the training is completed, you’ll need to take a written exam which will cover the different areas of DOT SAP knowledge.

Once you’ve qualified as a SAP, you’ll be required to take part in 12 hours of continuing education every 3 years. As a SAP it’s important to be informed of industry news such as new technologies, changes in any relevant rules, new interpretations, and new guidelines in order to effectively do your job.
