Steps to Get Back on the Road After a Failed DOT Drug Test

A failed DOT drug test can be a stressful experience, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your driving career. The DOT has procedures to help drivers get back on track, emphasizing safety and rehabilitation over punishment. When you fail a DOT drug test, you will be officially notified by both your employer and a Medical Review Officer (MRO). Once notified, you will be immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties as required by DOT regulations. Read on to learn more about the path to recovery and regaining your ability to drive.

Reclaiming Your Driving Career After a Failed DOT Drug Test

  1. Contact a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)

The first step toward reinstatement is to contact a DOT-qualified SAP. Their primary role is to assess whether you have a drug and/or alcohol problem and recommend a course of action to help you regain your eligibility to drive. Finding a qualified SAP should be your immediate priority, as this sets the stage for the rest of your recovery. During an evaluation, the SAP will assess your condition and, based on their findings, recommend a treatment plan and/or an educational program.

  1. Comply With the SAP’s Recommendations

Once the SAP has evaluated you and outlined a program, you must comply with their recommendations. The length and structure of these programs vary, but strict adherence to the SAP’s instructions is crucial. You must also keep detailed records of your progress, as you’ll need them for a follow-up evaluation with the SAP. This documentation is necessary to demonstrate that you have successfully completed the program.

  1. Undergo a Follow-Up Evaluation

After completing the SAP’s recommended program, you’ll undergo a follow-up evaluation. If the SAP is satisfied with your progress, you’ll be allowed to take a return-to-duty drug test, which is directly observed to ensure compliance. Passing this test is mandatory to restore your CDL privileges and return to your safety-sensitive functions.

  1. Follow-Up Testing

Once you’ve passed the return-to-duty test, you’ll be required to undergo follow-up testing. This is a series of unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests over a specified period (up to 60 months). This is a standard part of the DOT’s guidelines and ensures that you remain compliant in the long term. Failure to comply or refusing to take these tests could result in further suspension or job termination.
