SRS Finds Qualified DOT SAPs for DOT Mandated Employees Nationwide

If a Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated, safety sensitive employee fails a drug and/or alcohol test they must be immediately removed from their safety sensitive duties. They cannot resume their work until they successfully complete the required SAP process. After they receive notification of a failed drug and/or alcohol test, or if they refuse to test, they must be referred to a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) in their area. The DOT SAP must meet requirements and complete training and testing before they can be qualified.

What Does a Qualified DOT SAP Do?

A DOT qualified SAP evaluates DOT mandated employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation by failing a drug and/or alcohol test or refusing to submit. SAPs then determine the appropriate recommendations for education and/or treatment. They require a follow-up evaluation and recommend a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test before the DOT mandated employee can officially be cleared to return to duty.

If a DOT mandated employee recently failed a drug and/or alcohol test they can find a qualified SAP near them by getting in touch with SAP Referral Services (SRS). SRS has a database of SAPs nationwide and connects DOT mandated employees with a provider in their area so they can begin the return to duty process.

DOT Mandated Employees – Why You need a Qualified DOT SAP

A SAP is the only person who can recommend treatment and/or education for DOT mandated employees. It is required of the employee that they successfully comply with the SAPs recommendations. If they fail to comply with the treatment and/or education they will not be allowed to return for a follow-up evaluation. A SAP is also the only person who may recommend an employee for return to duty testing.
