SAP Return to Duty Program for Drivers and Carriers
After an alcohol-related incident killed several people on a New York City subway, Congress responded with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. This legislation requires all Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated safety-sensitive employees to adhere to drug and alcohol testing. Additionally, if they refuse or fail a drug and/or alcohol test they must comply with a SAP return to duty program. Read on to learn more about the process and how SAP Referral Services can help.
Benefits of the SAP Return to Duty Program
Since safety-sensitive employees operate commercial motor vehicles (CMV), there is significant potential for harming the public if these employees are under the influence on the job. The SAP return to duty program is designed to help employees who are struggling with substance abuse or addiction get the help they need.
A SAP is an experienced clinician that helps you begin your journey back to work. Your DOT-qualified SAP evaluates and assesses you to better understand your substance abuse issues. Next, they will make recommendations for appropriate treatment and/or education programs. Once you comply with their recommendations, the SAP will conduct a post-treatment evaluation. At that point the SAP can grant approval for you to submit to a return-to-duty test.
Please note, the DOT requires you to take a minimum of six follow up tests over a twelve-month period. Additionally, depending on your circumstances, you could be required to take more tests
Trust the Experts at SAP Referral Services
Employers of DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees are legally required to provide a list of SAPs to their employees. However, there are no assurances that this list is up to date and contains only DOT-qualified SAPs. To keep their DOT qualifications, SAPs need to keep up with specific continuing education requirements. The list provided by your employer may unintentionally contain SAPs who let their DOT qualification lapse. If you work with one of these individuals, the entire SAP return to duty program must be repeated. This mistake will certainly delay your return to work.
Ensure that you’re working with the right SAP by partnering with Sap Referral Services (SRS). At SRS, we guarantee that your SAP will be DOT qualified at the time of your first meeting.
