SAP Providers Give Peace of Mind to General Public
Did you know that SAP providers play an integral part in keeping the general public safe? Safety-sensitive employees perform functions that can have a direct impact on the safety of the public, their colleagues, and themselves, so it’s imperative that they aren’t working while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Thankfully, there’s policies in place to help ensure all DOT-mandated safety-sensitive employees remain drug and/or alcohol free by submitting to drug and/or alcohol tests.
How the SAP Process Works
When an employee fails a drug and/or alcohol test they are immediately removed from their safety-sensitive duties and must find a SAP near them. An employer will either provide them with a list of SAPs or a referral to a service agent like SAP Referral Services. If an employee chooses to contact the SAPs on the list they likely will need to leave messages, wait for return calls and hope the SAP has new client availability. The main thing for the employee to keep in mind is that contacting a SAP on their own can take longer than connecting with SAP Referral Services, a service agent.
During the return to duty process, SAP providers ensure safety-sensitive employees are drug and alcohol-free by carefully evaluating the employee, recommending the proper treatment and/or education, performing a follow-up evaluation, and referring the employee to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. These professionals are trained in, and familiar with, substance use disorders so they can fully recognize the issues the employee may be dealing with.
