The main thing for the employee to keep in mind is that contacting a SAP on their own can take longer than connecting with SAP Referral Services, a service agent.

During the return to duty process, SAP providers ensure safety-sensitive employees are drug and alcohol-free by carefully evaluating the employee, recommending the proper treatment and/or education, performing a follow-up evaluation, and referring the employee to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. These professionals are trained in, and familiar with, substance use disorders so they can fully recognize the issues the employee may be dealing with.
