SAP Programs in California to Get You Back to Work
When a DOT mandated safety-sensitive employee fails a drug and/or alcohol test by exceeding a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of 0.04% or consuming illegal drugs, they may no longer work any additional safety-sensitive shifts. Before they can return to work they must complete a return-to-duty process guided by a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). Unfortunately, finding a DOT-qualified SAP proves difficult for many. Thankfully, SAP Referral Services offers access to a nationwide network of professionals, including SAP programs in California, to help get you back to work.
What is the Return-to-Duty-Process?
The return-to-duty process involves various steps including education and/or treatment meant to help you not only stop your use of drugs and/or alcohol, but also get your life back on track. Successful compliance is required before your employer can consider you for return to work. Here is what to expect:
Step 1: The SAP Evaluates the Employee. The evaluation involves two parts: screening and assessment. First, during a screening the SAP determines whether or not you have a substance abuse problem. Next, the SAP recommends either treatment or education for you based on the nature of the substance use problem.
Step 2: Completing the Program. You must comply with the SAP’s recommendations. This means different things for everyone. You may be required to attend self-help meetings, complete in-patient treatment, outpatient treatment or educational programs. Once the employee complies with the requirements, the SAP re-evaluates the employee in a face-to-face interview. If the SAP feels the employee has made good progress toward sobriety, they are recommended for a return-to-duty test.
Step 3: Getting Back to Work. If the results of the return-to-duty test are negative the employee is eligible to go back to safety-sensitive duties. However, giving you your job back is at the discretion of the employer and not guaranteed. Once you return to safety-sensitive work, expect follow-up testing to continue for up to 5 years following completion of a return-to-duty program.
