SAP Evaluation – What Can I Expect?
If you have recently failed a drug and/or alcohol test, been removed from safety-sensitive duties, or have been referred to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for a SAP evaluation, you may be wondering what to expect. The SAP evaluation process is designed to determine if you have a substance abuse disorder, to provide recommendations for treatment and/or education, and to determine if you are fit to resume safety-sensitive duties. In this article, we will discuss what you can expect during the evaluation process and how to get started.
Finding a SAP in Your Area
The first step in the SAP evaluation process is finding a qualified SAP in your area. You can either find a SAP by using a list online or by contacting a service agent, such as SAP Referral Services. It is important to choose a SAP who is experienced and knowledgeable in substance abuse disorders, the DOT regulations, and has current qualifications.
The SAP Evaluation Process
The SAP evaluation process typically involves three steps: the initial evaluation, the recommendation for treatment or education, and the follow-up evaluation.
Initial Evaluation: The initial evaluation is a face-to-face meeting with the SAP to discuss your substance abuse history, undergo some assessment testing, review any prior treatment, and the circumstances surrounding the referral. With this information they can determine the extent of your drug and/or alcohol misuse and what steps you’ll need to take to be eligible to resume safety-sensitive duties.
Recommendation for Treatment and/or Education: After your initial evaluation, your SAP will provide recommendations for treatment and/or education. The comprehensive plan may include counseling, inpatient or outpatient programs, and drug and/or alcohol educational programs. The SAP will also make a recommendation regarding your eligibility to return to safety-sensitive duties.
Follow-up Evaluation: The follow-up evaluation is a critical component of the evaluation process. The SAP will monitor your compliance after you’ve completed your treatment and/or educational programs and provide recommendations for ongoing treatment, if applicable.
Returning to Duty After your SAP Evaluation
If you successfully complete the recommended treatment and/or education and are deemed eligible by the SAP, you may be able to return to safety-sensitive duties as long as you provide a negative result during your return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. If this is the case, your SAP will provide a report to your employer indicating that you are eligible to return to safety-sensitive duties.
