SAP Drug Program After a DOT Violation

DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees must commit to upholding the safety goals of the Department of Transportation. To keep themselves as well as the public out of harm’s way they’ll be tested for drugs and alcohol before they’re hired and randomly tested throughout their career. Additionally, testing occurs after involvement in many kinds of accidents. If an employee fails or refuses to take a drug and/or alcohol test as required by the DOT, they’ll need to find a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP guides you through a return-to-duty process allowing you to be eligible for performing safety-sensitive duties. Read on to learn more about a SAP return-to-duty program and how SAP Referral Services can match you with a SAP in your area.

Learn More About Substance Abuse Professionals

A DOT-qualified SAP is a licensed physician, or similarly licensed provider in the medical or behavioral health field. These specialists undergo specific training regarding drug and alcohol disorders. They also possess a deep understanding of DOT regulations and the return-to-duty process. Initially the SAP meets with the employee who has tested positive for drugs or alcohol. The SAP needs to determine the severity of the employee’s substance use issues. Next, they recommend education and/or treatment plan. The SAP monitors their progress through the plan and then conducts a follow-up evaluation. If they feel the employee has successfully followed the treatment plan the employee is approved for a return-to-duty test. If the employee doesn’t participate as guided, the SAP will send a report of non-compliance and they’ll have to start the DOT SAP program all over again.
