Partner With SRS After Qualified Substance Abuse Professional Training

Substance Abuse Professionals are licensed professionals that diagnose disorders related to controlled drugs and substance abuse. They are responsible for evaluating DOT mandated employees to protect the public. SAPs have the authority to recommend necessary treatment, education, rehabilitation, and follow-up testing in order to get a DOT mandated employee back to their safety-sensitive duties. However in order to assess employees mandated by the FAA, FRA, PHMSA and other DOT agencies, you must go through qualified Substance Abuse Professional training.

What is Qualified Substance Abuse Professional Training?

In order to evaluate DOT mandated employees, all SAPs have to undergo required training and testing. To maintain qualifications as a Substance Abuse Professional you must undergo re-training that includes professional development through CEUs and PDHs relevant to performing the Substance Abuse Professional functions. This re-training helps SAPs keep up with the changing DOT rules, guidelines, interpretations, emerging technologies, and adjustments to the return-to-work program and process.

Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Licenses

In addition to the qualified training and testing, SAPs are required to have one of the following licenses/certifications:

  • Licensed or certified Psychologist
  • Licensed Physician (Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy)
  • Licensed or certified Employee Assistance Professional
  • Licensed or certified Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Licensed or certified Social Worker
  • Drug and Alcohol Counselor certified by NAADAC, ICRC or NBCC

Every SAP will need to renew their state certification requirements and complete any additional training and exams necessary. The DOT requires SAPs to be knowledgeable about and have some clinical experience in diagnosing and treating controlled substance and alcohol abuse-related disorders.
