Looking for a DOT Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent?
A Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent is a company that assists employers and safety-sensitive employees during the SAP process.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, all companies that employ safety-sensitive employees are required to perform drug and/or alcohol tests upon pre-employment, randomly, after some accidents and for reasonable suspicion. When a safety-sensitive employee fails a drug and/or alcohol test they must immediately be removed from their duties and complete the SAP process. Only until they successfully comply with their SAP’s recommended outline for education and/or treatment, and receive a negative result from a follow-up drug and/or alcohol test, can the employee return to safety-sensitive duties.
Employers are required to refer employees to a Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent, or give them a SAP list, when they receive the failed drug and/or alcohol test. If the employer fails to meet this requirement they can be cited.
Why Choose a Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent?
Employers benefit from partnering with a Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent for several reasons. A Service Agent ensures that the SAP retains current state and international level credentials along with DOT trainings and testing. When an employee finds a SAP through a SAP list, or by looking for one online, there is the potential that their chosen SAP’s credentials are not up to date, as SAPs credentials are often self-reported. This can sometimes result in the employee having to complete the SAP process again with a qualified SAP.
A Substance Abuse Professional Service Agent also ensures that the SAP is knowledgeable about, and has clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and controlled substance related disorders, has completed DOT SAP qualification training, and has passed an examination administered by a nationally-recognized professional or training organization. They also ensure that during each three-year period from the date on which they completed the examination, the SAP completes continuing education of at least 12 professional development hours relevant to performing SAP functions.
