Learn More About a SAP Program for CDL Drivers
CDL drivers must uphold a high standard when operating their vehicles on public roads. Should they fail a drug and/or alcohol test they must comply with a return-to-duty process led by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) before being allowed back to work. If you’re looking for a SAP program for CDL drivers, SAP Referral Services can connect you to a DOT-qualified SAP in your area and get you started with the process.
Substances That Are Banned and Tested
The DOT requires testing for CDL drivers pre-employment and randomly throughout the year. Additionally, should a driver appear to be under the influence they are subject to reasonable suspicion testing. Finally, drivers undergo testing in the event of several types of accidents. The DOT calls for lab testing for: marijuana, PCP, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and methamphetamines. If you have an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater or have tested positive for any of the five classes of drugs listed above, you’ll be immediately removed from your safety-sensitive duties. Should you refuse to take a test it’s equivalent to you failing and you’ll face the same consequences.
How to Get Back to Work
Getting back on the job requires you to work with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). SAPs possess the knowledge to diagnose and treat alcohol and controlled substance disorders. These certified and licensed professionals also fully understand all DOT drug and alcohol testing and return-to-duty processes. A DOT qualified SAP evaluates CDL drivers who have tested positive for drugs and/or alcohol and develops a program unique to their needs. The recommendations may include treatment, education, and aftercare. Once the driver has complied with the program, the SAP evaluates them again. If the SAP is satisfied with their progress, the driver is approved for a return-to-duty test. Passing this test means you are eligible to then perform safety-sensitive job functions.
