How Long is the DOT SAP Program for My Employee?
Are you wondering what happens when your employee is enrolled in a SAP program and how long the DOT SAP program is? Are you unsure if your employee is abusing drugs and/or alcohol and want to know how to proceed? SRS is here to help guide you through the uncertainty.
When Your Employee Becomes a Cause for Concern
If you are keeping a careful eye on your employees, you may have noticed that a specific employee has been behaving erratically, is consistently late, or isn’t acting like they once have. “A reasonable suspicion test may only be conducted when a trained supervisor has observed specific, contemporaneous, articulable appearance, speech, body odor, or behavior indicators of alcohol use.”
When your employee is performing a job that directly correlates with public safety, it becomes crucial that they remain drug and alcohol free.
If Employee Fails Drug or Alcohol Test
If you have taken the step to subject your employee to a drug and alcohol test, and they fail, they must be immediately removed from their safety-sensitive duties.
Once they are removed from their duties, it is time for them to see a Substance Abuse Professional for an evaluation.
DOT SAP Program: What’s Next?
If your employee has begun the SAP program you might begin to wonder how long are they going to be out of work and what to expect. It’s important to know that every employee can have different completion times.
No employee’s alcohol and drug use or abuse is the same, and similarly, their SAP’s recommendations vary based on their unique situation. After being evaluated, you might be able to estimate the time required to complete the DOT return-to-duty process but it all depends on the employees compliance and return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test results.
