How Long Does it Take to Find a SAP?
If a safety-sensitive DOT-mandated employee fails a drug or alcohol test they will be removed from their safety sensitive duties and must find a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) in their area to begin the return-to-duty process. During this process the SAP will evaluate them to determine their specific level of substance misuse and then outline a recommended treatment and/or education program. Should the employee comply, they can return for a second evaluation and then, if the SAP determines compliance, they will be referred to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test.
This protocol was put into place by the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act. “The United States Congress recognized the need for a drug and alcohol free transportation industry, and in 1991 passed the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act, requiring DOT Agencies to implement drug and alcohol testing of safety-sensitive transportation employees.”
The Importance of Completing the Return-to-Duty Process Quickly
Failing a drug and/or alcohol test doesn’t have to cost you your career. When you successfully complete the return to duty process you have another chance at working in a safety-sensitive position. You don’t want to delay on starting the return to duty process, however, or you will be out of work (and income).
Find a SAP Using a SAP List?
When a DOT-mandated professional fails a drug screen, it can be difficult to find a SAP without assistance. A SAP List, which you typically get from your employer, has several downsides:
- You may need to call every SAP on the list
- Long waits for responses
- Some SAPs on the list may not have the up-to-date qualifications
- Long wait for an appointment
