Get Back to Work with a DOT SAP Program

The Department of Transportation takes safety seriously, including mandating that safety-sensitive employees must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screening as a condition of hire, after an accident, or just random testing to ensure compliance. Consequently, if you, a DOT mandated safety-sensitive employee, fail or refuse a test, you won’t be able to work. However, there is still hope when you comply with the return-to-duty process as part of the DOT SAP program.

What is the DOT SAP Program?

SAP stands for Substance Abuse Provider, and the program itself is aimed at getting DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees the help they need to overcome substance abuse and return to work. A DOT-qualified SAP can help you by recommending educational programs, therapy and/or other treatment and approve you to submit to a return-to-duty test. It’s a great opportunity for employees to be able to continue to work and embark on a healthier path for themselves.

How Does the DOT SAP Program Work?

If you’ve failed a drug and/or alcohol screening you must find a DOT-qualified SAP who will help you get into the treatment that suits your condition. The SAP will conduct an interview with you. You will share with them what kinds of substances, such as drug types or alcohol that you use, the frequency of your use, and how long you’ve been using.

Once the interview is complete, your SAP will recommend treatment or education which could include anonymous support meetings like AA or NA. Alternatively, they may require more intensive therapy, like Intensive Outpatient Therapy, which consists of several hours of group and individual therapy per week, or even Inpatient Rehabilitation, including medically supervised detox.

You’ll comply with the therapy and check in with your SAP throughout the process. Once you have met compliance, you’ll have a return-to-duty interview with the SAP. If they feel that the therapy is successful, you’ll receive paperwork from them allowing you to submit to a return-to-duty test.
