Finding a SAP Professional for FAA Employees

To keep our skies safe and protect the public, DOT mandated safety-sensitive aviation employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing. If they use drugs or misuse alcohol while on-duty, pre-duty, within 8 hours following an incident, or fail random testing, they will be removed from safety-sensitive functions. To get back to their duties they must complete the return-to-duty process with a SAP professional. Read on to learn how SAP Referral Services helps with the process.

Did You Fail Your Drug/Alcohol Test?

Are you a pilot, flight attendant, air traffic controller, or other professional associated with the flight industry? If so, you must comply with FAA drug and alcohol testing regulations. Should you fail or refuse a drug and/or alcohol test, you are required to comply with a return-to-duty process recommended by a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

First, you’ll meet with a SAP for an evaluation. They prescribe treatment and document your process for your current and future employers. After you complete the process, you will meet for another evaluation to ensure you were successful. Finally, if the SAP feels it is justified, you will be recommended for a return-to-duty test to get back to your safety-sensitive functions.

Employers must provide a SAP list to their employees, but it may not be that easy. If the list includes SAPs who are currently not qualified by the DOT, the steps taken by the employee will be null and void. Make the processes faster and easier by turning to SAP Referral Services.
