Find the Right SAP Professional

Recent data from the US Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration acknowledges that alcohol is a key factor in many road accidents in the country. In 2019, officials reported 10,142 deaths that resulted from accidents involving alcohol. Due to the grim statistics associated with drunk and impaired driving, the DOT employs a strict no-tolerance policy to help reduce accidents. For DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees, a failed drug and/or alcohol test means suspension from duties. To become eligible to get back to work, they must find a SAP professional and begin the return-to-duty process. Read on to learn more.

Information for DOT Mandated Safety-Sensitive Employees

In light of the above information, employees who hold safety-sensitive positions in the transportation sector must occasionally undergo workplace drug and alcohol screenings. The DOT regulations apply to many safety-sensitive employees across all of their modes. Each of these individuals hold a post where drug and/or alcohol use on the job can directly impact their lives, those of their co-workers, or members of the public.

Some of these duties include operating trains or ferries, pipeline jobs, or airplane-related tasks. Other workers categorized as safety-sensitive employees include persons with commercial driver’s licenses and technicians who use vehicles that transport hazardous materials.

A SAP professional, also known as a SAP or Substance Abuse Professional, assesses DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees who have violated drug and alcohol regulations. This is the first step of the DOT’s required return-to-duty process. After a thorough evaluation of the employee, the SAP provides informed recommendations regarding requirements for education, treatment, consequent screening, and/or aftercare.
