What is a SAP?
A Substance Abuse Professional, or SAP, is responsible for evaluating applicants/employees who have failed a DOT drug and/or alcohol test. They also make recommendations regarding treatment, follow-up tests, and continuing care for the employee. After the program ends, their findings are the deciding factor on whether the employee may submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test.
When Are DOT-Mandated Employees Tested for Drugs and/or Alcohol?
Due to the safety issues involved with DOT-mandated positions, employees must be drug tested before employment, anytime there is reasonable suspicion of drug and/or alcohol use, and when certain accidents happen while working. Should an employee fail the drug test, they will immediately be removed from their safety-sensitive position. Before they can return to any safety-sensitive position, they must first successfully complete the SAP process.
What Is the SAP Process?
During the SAP process, the employee must first be evaluated by a DOT-qualified SAP. Then, a referral is made by the SAP for education, treatment, or both. In order to return to work, the employee must comply with the treatment program specified and pass a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. Once the DOT SAP presents a recommendation to the employer, letting them know that the specified treatment plan has been successfully completed, the employer will decide whether or not to let the employee return.
