Find SAP Programs in California for FMCSA Employees!
If you work in California and your job falls under FMCSA regulations you will be required to undergo DOT mandated drug and/or alcohol testing. If you fail a drug and/or alcohol test you will need to complete an evaluation with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). Where do you find a qualified SAP in your area? Luckily, finding a SAP program in California is easy with SRS.
Finding a SAP is your first step to returning to safety-sensitive work. It is important to know the FMCSA drug and/or alcohol testing requirements before you begin your return to duty process.
What Is FMCSA, and What Are the Drug and Alcohol Test Requirements?
FMCSA is a United States Department of Transportation Agency that serves to regulate the trucking industry. It was formed in an effort to reduce traffic accidents involving trucks and buses.
The FMCSA has stringent drug and alcohol testing requirements and all CDL holders are subject to both alcohol and drug testing. In addition to alcohol, drivers are tested for marijuana, opiates (opium and codeine derivatives), amphetamines, cocaine, and PCP. As of January 2018 DOT tests include screening for hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, and oxycodone.
There are several situations where a driver might be required to take a drug or alcohol test. A pre-employment test is always required before a safety sensitive employee begins working in a safety-sensitive position. There is also post-accident testing, which is required after a driver is involved in an accident that meets the criteria of 49 CFR Part 382.303. Drivers may also be subject to random testing or whenever there is reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol use.
Failing or refusing a drug or alcohol test will result in the driver being removed from their safety sensitive work until they complete the return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional.
