Find a SAP Program in California
As a manager or employer of DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees, you are likely well aware of the random drug and alcohol testing regulations that the DOT enforces. The DOT is responsible for providing safe and reliable modes of transportation for public citizens. The United States Congress passed regulations in 1991 after recognizing the danger to the lives of the traveling public if safety sensitive employees are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. If you have an employee who has failed or refused to take a drug and/or alcohol test, they are required to complete a SAP program. If they are looking for a SAP program in California, or anywhere in the United States, SRS can connect them with a qualified SAP in your area.
How to Find a Qualified SAP
After failing or refusing a drug and/or alcohol test, a DOT mandated safety-sensitive employee cannot return to their position until they have fully completed a return-to-duty program with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). A qualified SAP will evaluate the employee and recommend an individualized plan. This treatment program may include education, treatment, and/or aftercare.
If an employee tests positive for drugs and/or alcohol, as their employer, you are obligated to provide them with a list of SAPs. However, please note that to be DOT-qualified, a SAP must have specialized credentials, specific clinical experience, and they must fulfill continuing education course requirements. If a SAP on your list has fallen behind on any of their qualifications, they are considered expired. If someone completes their SAP Program with a SAP whose qualifications have expired, the DOT will require them to retake the program. Lists of SAPs are not guaranteed to include SAPs who are up-to-date on all their qualifications.
However, there is an answer. If your employees are looking for a SAP program in California, or anywhere nationwide, you can completely forgo this risk of working with an unqualified SAP, by using SRS (SAP Referral Services).
