Find a SAP Evaluator for PHMSA Mandated Employees

Workers at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) have an important job. Working with natural gas, from installing pipelines to maintaining them and transporting the hazardous materials, can be dangerous. Therefore, it’s important that DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees follow all safety protocols, from the DOT. Performing your job duties under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol can lead to serious consequences, for yourself, the natural gas you’re working with, and the people around you.

Drug Testing Within the PHMSA

For this reason, drug and alcohol testing is an important part of the PHMSA employment protocol. Testing is a condition of hire, can be conducted randomly, and may be necessary if an on-the-job accident occurs. Follow-up testing will occur after failing a drug and/or alcohol screening and is a requirement if you wish to resume your job duties.

If you’ve tested positive for drugs and/or alcohol while employed as a DOT mandated safety-sensitive employee of the PHMSA, you are probably wondering what your next steps are.

Your Substance Abuse Program Options

To return to a PHMSA mandated safety-sensitive position after you’ve tested positive for drugs or alcohol, you’ll be required to complete a return-to-duty program. Completion of this program includes an evaluation from a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). To start, you’ll have an initial meeting with a DOT qualified SAP evaluator who determines the level of treatment you need.

Once they’ve determined your personal needs, you may have to attend drug or alcohol rehabilitation, counseling, and/or drug and alcohol education. As you work through your program, you’ll be monitored by your assigned SAP. Your SAP evaluator will document your compliance and submit a report to your employer. Following each of the stipulations your personalized program will get you back to work quickly. Once you’ve completed the return-to-duty process outlined by your SAP counselor you will be recommended for a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. If you pass the drug and/or alcohol test then it is up to your employer to allow you to resume your duties.
