DOT SAP Helps You Get Back to Work
DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees bear the responsibility of preserving the public’s safety. The US Department of Transportation takes maintaining this safety very seriously. Therefore, drug and alcohol testing is a requirement for all DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees. Violations include failing or refusing either of these tests and require meeting with a DOT SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) to start the return-to-duty-process. SAP Referral Services provides access to DOT qualified SAPs so you can get on the road back to work as soon as possible. Read on to learn more.
When to Expect Drug and Alcohol Testing
DOT mandated safety-sensitive employees are specialized professionals. They come into contact daily with the public in their work as train or ferry operators, pilots or on a flight crew, fixing a pipeline, or driving a bus or tractor trailer.
First, potential employees are tested before they can be hired. Then, once on the job, they can expect random tests throughout their career. Additionally, if there is suspicion about an employee working under the influence during work, they are subject to a drug and/or alcohol test.
Why Employees Need a SAP Program
If at any point an employee fails or refuses to take a drug and/or alcohol test, they will be immediately removed from their DOT mandated safety-sensitive duties and possibly lose their certification or license due to the violation. Then, they must complete the return-to-duty process which requires them to meet with a SAP. The SAP makes recommendations about the treatment, education, follow-up testing, and aftercare for the employee who violated the rules. Your SAP monitors your progress as you complete the required steps. Finally, the SAP completes a face-to-face meeting for a follow-up and decides whether or not the employee is cleared for a return-to-duty test.
