DOT SAP Guidelines For The FRA

One of the DOT’s safety objectives is to avoid potential issues, which means they have a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy for employees who perform safety-sensitive functions. This is just one of the DOT SAP Guidelines for the FRA. If a DOT-safety-sensitive employee fails a drug or alcohol test they will be referred to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). SAP Referral Services (SRS) can help employees find and make an appointment with a qualified SAP in their area.

Are You an FRA employee? Learn the DOT SAP Guidelines for the FRA

If you are a DOT-safety-sensitive employee working with the FRA and failed a drug and/or alcohol test, you will need to see a SAP. A SAP, or Substance Abuse Professional, is a clinical officer whose job is to evaluate an employee that has violated a part of the Department of Transportation’s alcohol/drug policy and guidelines. After a SAP performs their initial evaluation of the employee they will determine a course of treatment. Treatment options for an FRA employee can include education, treatment, and after-care. A SAP also determines when it is the right time for the DOT-mandated employee to complete a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test and, if the employee passes, the SAP can recommend they be returned to safety-sensitive duties.

Unannounced follow-up random testing will be required after return to safety-sensitive duties. DOT SAP guidelines for the FRA state that because the employee is performing safety-sensitive job functions it is essential that they do not use alcohol and/or drugs. The DOT SAP Guidelines for the FRA want every employee to do their jobs safely while maintaining public safety.
