DOT SAP Evaluation: Your First Step Back to Work
Is your job on the line because you failed or refused to take a DOT-mandated drug and/or alcohol test? To return to your safety-sensitive duties you must complete the return-to-duty process. The process begins when you undergo a DOT SAP evaluation. This evaluation examines your drug or alcohol use, the severity of the addiction if present, how the substance affects your life and more. If you need to undergo a DOT SAP evaluation, SAP Referral Services can help you find a DOT-qualified SAP quickly and easily.
What to Expect During a DOT SAP Evaluation
Your DOT SAP evaluation is separated into two parts: screening and assessment. First, the screening determines whether or not you have a substance abuse problem. Next, the SAP defines the nature of the problem and determines the recommendations for treatment. Expect to answer questions about your history of substance use, types of substances used, and any lingering side effects.
The SAP helps you locate appropriate treatment providers and they serve as a guide and evaluator as you move through the process. Not all employees who failed a drug or alcohol test have an addiction problem, so the evaluation allows employees to receive an accurate diagnosis. Sometimes the evaluation reveals struggles with underlying mental health issues. Expect a thorough and complete evaluation. Be truthful and help the SAP understand your substance use. The greater your effort, the better your chances for recovery and getting back to work.
