Did Your Employee Fail a Drug and/or Alcohol Test? What’s Next?

If you manage safety-sensitive DOT-mandated employees, you might be wondering how long is the DOT SAP program? If your employee failed a drug and/or alcohol test upon preemployment, after certain accidents, due to reasonable suspicion, at random, or during follow-up testing, you are legally obliged to immediately remove them from their safety-sensitive duties and refer them to a service agent or give them a SAP list. The faster they are enrolled with a SAP, the faster they can get back to work, and the smaller your company’s loss of productivity will be.

Guaranteed Qualified SAPs: Partner With a Service Agent

You want your employee to get through the return-to-duty program as quickly as possible, and the best way to do that is to partner with a service agent. A service agent keeps up-to-date with all of the latest SAP qualifications and keeps a large network of Substance Abuse Professionals with the relevant experience, so a service agent is best positioned to get your employee into a program that works for them right away.

If your employee chooses to use a SAP list they will have to spend time calling SAPs to see if they are still taking appointments, have current qualifications, and can fit them into their busy schedule. This can all be frustrating for someone who recently has been removed from their job and can make the return to duty process even longer.

How Long is the DOT SAP Program?

Every employee’s return to duty process will be different. The length of SAP programs vary depending on the employee’s substance misuse at hand. Once the SAP evaluates the employee they can determine the appropriate treatment and/or educational program for the employee and then it is up to the employee to follow through on that.

At the employee’s second evaluation the SAP will determine if the program has been complied with. If it has, the SAP can refer the employee to submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test. If the test is negative, and at the employers discretion, the employee can resume safety-sensitive duties.
