Become a Substance Abuse Professional and Partner with SRS

A Substance Abuse Professional is a licensed professional with the knowledge required for the diagnosis of all controlled drugs, substances, and their related disorders. They evaluate DOT- mandated employees and make sure they are in the best position to serve the public and not place them in harm’s way. They have the authority to give recommendations on education, treatment, follow-up testing, and/or rehabilitation.

Becoming A Substance Abuse Professional

To become a Substance Abuse Professional, you must undergo training and complete required testing. This training is dire as it helps SAPs keep up with information required for their profession, such as: emerging technology, new interpretations, most recent guidance, changing rules, and adjustments to the DOT’s return-to-duty program. Requalification training includes professional development through PDHs and CEUs that are relevant to performing all SAP functions. After required education an exam is required. A Substance Abuse Professional must also have in-person experience with treatment and diagnosis for alcohol and controlled substance disorders.

Substance Abuse Professionals are required to have at least one of the following licenses:

Licensed Physician (Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy)
Licensed or certified Psychologist
Licensed or certified Social Worker
Licensed or certified Marriage and Family Therapist
Licensed or certified Employee Assistance Professional

Those who are certified Drug and Alcohol Counselors, which are certified by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors Certification Commission (NAADAC), National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) or the International Certification Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (ICRC), are also acceptable.
