Are You a Provider of DOT SAP Evaluations?

A SAP is more than just someone who performs DOT SAP evaluations. A Substance Abuse Professional has a large responsibility that includes protecting the general population. It is their job to see people who have failed DOT-mandated drug tests and determine the correct treatment plan which will include more testing, a treatment program, and possible aftercare.

What is the Role of a SAP?

If you are a Substance Abuse Professional then your role is to evaluate whether or not an employee has a substance abuse problem and then recommend a treatment or education program based on your findings. Throughout DOT SAP evaluations you must remain neutral and remember that you don’t work for the employee or the employer, but instead, your role is to protect the people who may be harmed if an employee struggling with drugs or alcohol is allowed to prematurely return to the workplace.

What are the Qualifications to be a SAP?

In order to be a SAP that offers DOT SAP evaluations you have to meet one of several licensing requirements and have demonstrated knowledge or clinical experience treating substance abuse-related problems. In addition, all providers must complete “DOT Qualification Training & Testing” along with 12 hours of continuing education every three years. The following licenses are accepted by the DOT if you are interested in becoming a substance abuse provider:

  • Licensed or certified psychologist
  • Licensed or certified marriage and family therapist
  • Licensed physician or doctor of osteopathy
  • Licensed or certified social worker
  • Licensed or certified employee assistance professional
  • Drug and alcohol counselor certified by the IC&RC, NAADAC, or NBCC

Benefits of Working with a Provider Network to Perform DOT SAP Evaluations

If you decide to offer DOT SAP evaluations after receiving the proper training there are many benefits of working with a provider network, such as SAP Referral Services. To start, this is the easiest way to increase your client load on a consistent basis since you will not need to find your own clients. Instead, the referral network will send them your way as you have openings. In turn, this allows you to lower your marketing budget and concentrate on clients instead. If you are a provider interested in becoming part of a provider network, contact SAP Referral Services and fill out our provider enrollment form. We work with clients throughout the nation and can assist in connecting potential clients to your office.

SAP Referral Services (SRS) is the leading facilitator for mandated substance abuse evaluations. SRS maintains an extensive network of qualified providers in more than 3,000 locations nationwide for testing violations that originate from any of the DOT’s modes including FMCSA, FAA, FRA, FTA, USCG and PHMSA, or a company’s internal drug and alcohol testing policy.
