FastTrack to Success, Find a SAP Provider Now!
When a DOT-mandated, safety-sensitive employee fails a drug and/or alcohol test they must be referred to a SAP provider and begin the SAP process. It is not until they successfully comply with the provisions laid out by their SAP that they can be evaluated for consideration of return to their safety-sensitive role.
Every new employee joining a safety-sensitive workforce should be familiar with the company policy regarding drug and alcohol testing regulations. As a safety-sensitive employee, you must abide by all regulations, including; not using alcohol within 4 hours of reporting for service (8 hours for flight crew), you must not refuse to submit any test or adulterate/substitute it, and if you’re on duty you must not be under the influence of any drug or alcohol.
Find a SAP Provider and then What?
If found to have violated any of the drug and/or alcohol rules, an employee will immediately be removed from any safety-sensitive functions, and will not be allowed to return until they successfully comply with the SAP process. First, the employee will need to be referred to a SAP provider. Their SAP provider will evaluate them and outline their recommended treatment and/or education. After the employee has successfully complied with the outlined treatment and/or education they will return to their SAP for a follow-up evaluation. If the SAP determines that the employee has complied, they will be cleared for a return-to-duty drug and/or alcohol test. The employee is then subject to unannounced follow-up tests for an extended period of time.
