DOT Mandated Employees – Know the DOT Drug Testing Rules

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires safety-sensitive employees to undergo regular drug/alcohol testing. If you fail your DOT drug and/or alcohol test then you are required by the DOT to undergo an evaluation with a SAP and complete treatment and/or education before returning to your safety-sensitive duties. If you are a DOT mandated employee it is important to know the DOT drug testing rules. Read on to learn more about the DOT drug testing rules.

Know the DOT Drug Testing Rules

The DOT includes the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard in their drug testing rules and policies. If you are a member of any of these administrations you are required to know and follow the DOT drug testing rules.

DOT drug and/or alcohol tests may be performed randomly, upon reasonable suspicion or during pre-employment screening. If any of your tests come back with a positive result for drugs and/or alcohol you will be required to immediately stop performing your safety-sensitive duties.

The DOT has new rules about the drug and alcohol testing. They are taking into account the opioid crisis that is taking place in the United States. The alcohol and drug panel now includes semi-synthetic opioid drugs. Since many opioids are prescribed for a variety of reasons, the DOT allows employees to provide a legitimate medical explanation for the positive result.
