What Does FRA Post-Accident Drug Testing Entail?
In an effort to prevent railroad accidents and casualties, DOT mandated employees who have failed a drug and/or alcohol test must complete drug and/or alcohol treatment or education programs. Successful compliance is required in order to return to safety-sensitive positions. All DOT mandated employees are to be tested. These tests can be random, post-accident, and for reasonable suspicion.
If you fail FRA post-accident drug testing, you will be referred to a qualified SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) and must comply with required treatment and/or education in order to get back to your safety-sensitive work.
The FRA Post-Accident Drug Testing Rules
The FRA will investigate accidents that involve employee and passenger fatalities. If a DOT mandated employee has been involved in an accident, a DOT drug and/or alcohol test will be conducted.
FRA post-accident testing requires blood and urine tests from all DOT mandated employees. The purpose of testing those involved is to determine if drug and/or alcohol abuse was a cause. If you failed FRA post-accident drug testing you are required by the DOT to schedule a substance abuse evaluation with a qualified SAP.
